I've been meditating every single day for an entire year! I wish I had a medal! (I'm aware that feeding the ego is totally missing the point. I have a long way to go.) Anyway, I felt ready to take my practice to a whole nutha level. Since I use a guided meditation app (Headspace) for 20 minutes every morning, I wanted to try mantra meditation at night...you know, change it up a bit. I thought that it would be a great idea to start every morning with a sweet spiritual practice and end every night (or night's that I needed that extra grounding) with a light mantra meditation and offering.
Finding a mantra would be easy right? WRONG. OMG...do you have any idea how many mantra's are out there for the picking? Which one would be right for me?
I quickly fell down the mantra meditation rabbit hole as Transcendental Meditation, Vedic Meditation, Primordial Sound Meditation sites popped up...each with its own lock and key. Who knew that mantra meditation (a technique that predates Buddhism!) could be so secret society. Each "school" of mantra meditation cost upwards $2,000 to "learn" their special technique and "receive" your personalized mantra.
Now, don't get me wrong...I'm all about it. If I had the cash, I would've signed up on the spot. But, it would primarily be because I love community. I love being in the same room with like minded people on a similar mission, wanting to evolve...what could be better than that? However, I knew that there had to be (there just had to be!) a cheaper way to learn, again, this ancient technique practiced around the world for thousands of years.
In the end, I did what anyone who didn't have $2,000 would do...I googled it.
Here's how to do mantra meditation:
Ok, now how about that personalized mantra? TM and Vedic Meditation folks lure you in with the promise of receiving your own special mantra. I want one! :) But without the dough, I had to get crafty. So, that's when I discovered Willa. Not only did she do an entire Vedic reading on me- which includes what "phase" I'm in (transformation), what my karma is (communication) and rituals I should build into my spiritual practice (offerings to the 5 elements)- she also gave me my very own mantra based off of my natal chart. Success...and at only a fraction of the cost.
She also makes these amazing Plant Elixirs which support your meditation- you can get here.
Ok, with that said...you don't need Willa either...though getting a Vedic reading is a totally rad experience.
Basically it's a sound or a phrase (that you connect to) repeated over and over again.
Here are a few of my favorites:
- Om mani padme hum
- I am spirit
- The light has come
- So Hum
- I am
- Sa ta na ma
