Oiling. I first heard this term used by Angela Shore...founder and creator of Jiva-Apoha. The minute she said it, I was like- wow- why isn't this an internet meme yet and why didn't I come up with it myself! Genius right? She defines "Oiling" as an action- the sacred process of massaging healing oils all over your body- head to toe.
This is very similar to the Ayurvedic ritual of Abyanga, or "self-massage". Yet, Angela has a much more modern and relaxed spin to it and her supercharged and super healing oils takes this ancient practice to a whole nutha level.
She suggests using Jiva-Apoha oils right out of the shower. You want your skin to be moist, pores wide open. To achieve this with ease, gently pat your skin with a towel...no need to rub or dry off completely.
Angela starts passing me bottles to try on my arm and I start swooning. These oils go on so smoothly and in an instant I'm enveloped with healing, heady and grounding scents. I could tell right away that this was potent stuff and the smell lingered on my skin for a surprisingly long time.
She also tells me, as I'm "oiling" my arm with Amma- to nurture, Sukhin- to uplift, Kama- for joy, Parutka- to heal, "you'll know that you're skin is well hydrated when it has a nice silky sheen to it afterwards." Apparently, if my skin soaks up the product too quickly and looks matte right away, I need more oil!
Needless to say, I was obsessed. Angela left me with Thunderbird- the oil for elevating vibrations and transformation (somehow she knew that it was just what I needed). That night, I got a Vedic reading (more on that later) and was told that I was in my "transformation phase". The universe speaks!
The next day, I ran to three different stores in NYC and Brooklyn to pick up some Sukhin and Amma for myself. If you're a New Yorker...you can get it here, here and here. But if you don't live in New York...you can also get it directly from the source- here.
Jiva-Apoha has an oil for every need. However, if you're looking for something that's totally and uniquely...you...well, Angela also created Personalized Bespoke Body Oils.
