I envy those people who can go through the day without creating a single item of trash. Though, I know it's not a talent to be envied but a choice that I can make. Like any habit, it requires a huge shift in consciousness and daily decision making. And, it starts with just a single step.
Here's a list of all my single steps that have added up to equal a lot less trash at the end of my day.
1) Bag the Habit. I love this company. They make grocery shopping a lot more eco friendly. I'm lucky enough to have a grocery store across the street from me and my husband and I pretty much go every day. The plastic and paper bags add up. But now I just leave my Bag The Habit bags at the front door- easy access and so I don't forget- and make sure to use them instead of the endless amounts of plastic bags needed to lug all that we consume.
2) Blue Avocado. I love ziploc bags. I do. I just love how they keep things separate, fresh and organized. But, I was feeling way to guilty about how many we went through in a month just to save a strawberry, sliced lemons, or nuts. So, I invested in these reusable zip locks and haven't turned back. They're just as handy and so much more earthy friendly.
3) Hummingbird Glass Straws. I love making smoothies for breakfast...and I love drinking it out of a straw. It just goes down smoother. (all in my head? who knows). But, I started to get very aware, with the help of Katie from The Green Product Junkie, just how devastating our straw habit can be to mother earth. So, I've been using these glass ones instead and actually prefer them! It feels cleaner and more refined...like a smoothie upgrade.
