I hate working out. HATE. Yoga, is usually the method of choice for those, like me, who'd rather cut out chocolate than run a mile. However, honestly, I don't even like yoga all that much.
One crazy day, not too long ago, I decided to venture out (across the street) and try the bikram center that was literally a stone's throw from my job. What do I have to lose, I thought. It was only a few steps away, they had an awesome beginner's rate and it stated that they uniformly go through 26 postures- easy right?
Boy, was I wrong. The minute (no second) I entered that 105 degree room I wanted to quit. Throughout the 90 minute session, I felt like I was going to faint. I had visions of being rushed to the hospital, soaking in my own sweat, pleading for water. Not cute.
Yet, after accomplishing (I'm sorry– surviving) that class, I felt wonderful. Now, I'm not a masochist, so I won't be doing that again anytime soon. However, I believe that hot yoga is the best of both worlds.
Instead of 105 degrees, a hot yoga room is kept at a manageable 85-90 degrees. Instead of uniformly following a series of 26 poses (where you stick out like a sore thumb if you fall behind) you go through a simple flow, sun salutations and can get into child's pose as often as you'd like- no judgement.
Ultimately, you get to sweat, detox and deepen your stretch without the grief, light-headedness and 911 on speed dial.
There aren't many hot yoga centers in NYC so I was psyched when I discovered Prana Power Yoga right around the corner from where I lived. They are always offering Groupon and Gilt City deals so keep your eyes peeled.
For those of you who are still skeptical, remember... it detoxifies your body which can lead to clearer skin.
