Goodbye year of the horse...Hello year of the Sheep (or Goat or Shoat). Chinese New Year is a really big deal in my family- and NO, it's not because I'm Chinese. It's because of the red envelopes. JK- kind of.
I'm at that age now where it's (almost) inappropriate for me to receive red envelopes and should probably start giving them out- eh. One of the major bummers of getting older.
For those of you who don't celebrate Chinese New Year and wanna...here are some tips:
1) If you're 29 or older- get a dozen or so red envelopes and put money in them (amount based on budget). Give them to friends and family under 29 years old. If you are under 29 (or 33 and shameless like me)- get those pockets ready.
2) Cook fish and eat it- it's good luck
3) Make hand made dumplings and stick a penny in a few random ones. The lucky one who finds the penny- and doesn't choke- wins a red envelope!
4) Bring your neighbors mandarin oranges- again, a symbol of good luck and prosperity.
Happy Chinese New Year Wild Ones
